Dressing To Enhance Your Portrait

Beautiful and memorable portraits don't just happen, they are carefully planned. I will use my talent and skill to capture your special expression. You will be photographed in an artistic and flattering way, that will add a dimension of luxury to your portrait. Look over the following suggestions to see how you may participate in the planning of your "very special personality portrait". I am here to help you, so feel free to discuss any questions or ideas you may have, before your scheduled portrait session. That way you'll get the look you want.

*  I will help you select a background. Clothing should match the background in a traditional portrait. Your clothing will tend to dominate your portrait if it contrasts with the background.

*  The face should be the focal point of your portrait. Avoid large or bold patterns and colors that may tend to draw attention away from the face.

*  Adults should wear long sleeves. Short sleeves are acceptable only for the most casual portraits. Short sleeves are fine for children.

*  Traditional clothes will stand the test of time. Play clothes (kids in sports gear, for instants) may not. Play clothes are fine, if that's the effect you want.

*  Fully coordinate your attire from head to toe. Don't assume we will do only head and shoulder portraits. Be prepared for full length portraits.

*  Select a color theme for family portraits. Colors should be members of the same color family. Don't mix casual and formal attire.

*  Darker clothing tends to minimize body size. Light clothing tends to emphasize body size. Don't dress a heavy person in white. Don't dress a skinny person in black.

*  Keep the tonal range of clothing in group portraits the same. Don't mix light and dark values.

*  There is no way to hide "five o'clock shadow" in your portraits. Men should shave an hour or two before the photo session if this is a problem.

*  New haircuts often don't look good in portraits. If you are getting a haircut, do so 2 to 3 weeks before your portrait session.

*  If you will be wearing eye glasses in your portrait, you should have your eye doctor remove your lenses from the frames. Or ask your doctor to loan you a pair of frames that are similar to your own, without any lenses in them. Glass over the eyes will make them look unnatural. Glass also distorts the side of the face. The right way to do this is to wear glasses without lenses. Contact lenses are no problem.

*  Makeup should be worn the way you normally wear it. Have all your makeup available in case any minor modifications are required.

*  To assure a successful portrait, plan to use several outfits.

Please Review This Important Information

Remember the objective of your portrait... a beautiful, sensitive portrait, which shows the relationship and personalities of each person in the portrait.

*  Keep the clothing very subtle, and be careful not to dress anyone in an outfit that they don't want to wear. Everyone should feel relaxed and comfortable in their outfit.

*  Avoid having any person "jump" out of the portrait, because he or she is dressed in a lighter or brighter outfit than everyone else. Work for balance, harmony and color coordination.

*  When you discuss the upcoming portrait session with your children, simply let them know how excited you are about the photography and leave it at that.

*  If there is anyone in your family that has a particular problem with the photography session, please let me know beforehand so I can minimize or eliminate the problem.

*  The secret to success here is communication. I am here to help you and create outstanding portraiture for you. So please, ask any questions you have.

"Where should I hang my portrait?"

You'll get the most viewing enjoyment from your portrait if it hangs in the room where you spend most of your leisure time.

*  Consider the location where your portrait will be displayed. The color theme of the portrait should blend well with the colors in the room. Design your portrait to compliment the room.

*  Consider the wall space where your portrait will hang. Your portrait should occupy at least 50% of the available wall space. This will allow for maximum viewing enjoyment.

*  Consider a wall that is within a comfortable viewing distance and angle from the main seating areas. You want to see the portrait without having to get up and stand right in front of it.

*  The size of your portrait should be large enough for you to see the expression from the seating areas of the room. Being able to see the expression is the key to enjoying your portrait.

My quality personality portraits are made with a great deal of care and craftsmanship. My method of creation does not lend itself to mass production. I always maintain the highest standards of my craft. I am deeply committed to the excellence of my work and the quality of my finished product and service. My personality portraits are designed to be enjoyed for many years to come. I hope you will find them a lasting source of enjoyment and pleasure. I trust you will agree that excellence is the only standard worth insisting upon.
