Preparing For Your Business/Executive Portrait
A good quality business portrait can go a long way toward enhancing your professional image. Here are some simple hints you can observe to improve the appearance of your portraits:
Clothing:
1. Solid colors are less distracting than patterns or prints.
2. Avoid strong contrasts between shirt and jacket; a light blue shirt or blouse with a medium coat (gray, camel, etc.) is better than a white shirt with a navy blue or black blazer.
3. Gentlemen: a conservative tie should be worn unless you plan to update your portrait every year.
4. "Five o'clock shadows": if you have a dark or heavy beard, schedule an early morning session or make time to shave just before your photography session. Even several hours growth can be evident in a photograph and can't be removed by retouching.
5. Ladies: Jewelry such has a necklace, earrings or pin is certainly in good taste and can be worn without distraction.
6. Makeup: Apply as you would normally wear it for an evening out. Pay special attention to your eyes, which is what people first see in a photograph.
7. Glasses: If you wear glasses all the time, you'll want to have them in your portraits. I recommend having your optician either remove your lenses temporarily from your frames, or lend you a pair of frames like yours, but without lenses. This eliminates the glare and distortion problems associated with wearing glasses.
Other Suggestions:
8. Plan ahead. Your preview pictures will be ready for viewing in 7 to 14 days. Facial retouching is available and is highly recommended to improve the total quality of your portraits.
9. Have enough portraits made right away. Chances are you'll need more than a few. When a publicity opportunity comes your way, you'll need your business portrait quickly so it's a good idea to have extra portraits on hand.
